The Cyborg Wedding

We are Swedish oil painter Agnes Hjalmarsson and musician Andy Yeo, the artist/influencer duo Cyborgs Making Out. Our collaborative practice explores identity, cultural in-betweenness and belonging through painting, photography, music, sound and installation. The way we make art has always been inseparable from the way we live, so when we got married, we celebrated in the only way that felt true to us.

Rather than following a traditional wedding formula, we created a celebration that reflected our artistry and shared experiences as third-culture artists with Chinese, Korean and Swedish influences, honouring where we come from while embracing the freedom to create traditions of our own.

Wedding Gallery

Our personal ceremony was held outside nearby the couple's neighbourhood. The aisle was a steep hill, surrounded by bushes, and the bride walked down wearing a modernized Hanbok (Korean folk dress) tailor made in Seoul and the groom was wearing a Japanese vintage tuxedo.

The reception and party was held in a simple Folkets hus, each guest received an original oil portrait, the venue was filled with Agnes´ paintings of the couple and full of performances, most notably an original song written by the groom. The decorations and traditions paid homage to the couple's Chinese and Korean roots while still embodying the "Third Culture" concept running throuh "Cyborgs Making Out.

"The Cyborg Wedding" - Music and Lyrics by Andy Yeo

Torn like leaves

Now I can see beneath

Your feathered suit

The machine

Conductive failures

Short circuit tears

sparks in cables

that tear and wear

Exploded parts through ripped up seams

How her wires jolt and her silver sheens

junkyard empress, her majesty

she’s a cyborg just like me

We walk through fields

and acid trails

programmed to feel

love and pain

We believe

the prophecy

When two androids meet

it always rains

Apocalypse, the robot dreams

The Rapture’s coming the psychic screams

somewhere there’s just you and me

A cyborg wedding and a slot machine

Walls they build

Concrete seals

as we wait to speak

the words that heal

Then I pierced your heart with the words I drew

From the sheath of the silence I held onto

When Fears and desires

Take control

And a fuse retires

from overloads

Let the bittersweet, let the sour through

Sugar too sweet and devours you

Soon we’ll kiss to close our open wounds.

Where roses raged and violence bloomed

As I braid your wires

and you rewrite my code

We exchange our vows

merge our souls

On my empty plains, that seasons bruised

On my hollow soil, and exhausted roots

I’ll let you in and water you

so roses can grow, and violets bloom

Then the day after the unconventional artist wedding, the knot was officially tied in a traditional Swedish church ceremony with closest family.
