AGNES HJALMARSSON

Agnes Hjalmarsson (Helsingborg, 2002) is a Swedish oil painter whose work navigates the intersections of identity, cultural heritage, and human connection through an autobiographical lens. After graduating from Östra Grevie Folkhögskola’s fine art programme (2023) she has embraced the challenges and freedoms of being a full-time, self-employed artist. Hjalmarsson’s work is grounded in figurative oil painting and often honors or reinterprets collective and personal narratives. Largely inspired by her mother's adoption, her  solo exhibitions Made in Sweden, Born in Translation and Hal-muh-ni-pogo-ship-a-sayo investigates the cultural tension between her Korean heritage and Swedish upbringing.

At its core however, Hjalmarsson’s portfolio functions as a visual diary, each painting a poetic record of emotional states, fleeting encounters, and lived experiences. She describes her body of work as a "love letter to life," where each work documents a time of her life, emphasizing the emotional resonance of the moments depicted. This is particularly evident in her series To My Muse, in which her partner, musician Andy Yeo, becomes both subject and collaborator.

Hjalmarsson’s practice is a testament to painting’s ability to reflect, question, and connect. Whether through personal storytelling or broader cultural commentary, she uses her work to explore what it means to belong to oneself, to another, and to the world.
