ARTIST STATEMENT
Hands of Seoul/ Souls of Han is a street photography project consisting of 95 images taken in Seoul over the course of two days. It’s a portrait of a previously war torn, post-colonial city where a dark history lingers despite the modern technology and beloved pop culture phenomenons. The series aims to capture “Han” and the contemplative nature of Korean society, adjusting and persisting through the rapid, major changes. This while also portraying the first impression by a foreigner trying to reconnect with her roots.
BACKROUND
I was born in southern Sweden, 2002 to a Korean adoptee. Growing up, I’ve always felt a disconnect to both cultures since my appearance never corresponded with my Scandinavian upbringing. So when my childhood dream of visiting my grandmother and relatives came true in the Summer of 2023, I wanted to commemorate my first impression of Korea. Hands of Seoul is the result of someone trying to connect with an unfamiliar home, as a stranger who blends right in.
